"Painting embraces all the ten functions of the eye, that is to say, darkness, light, body and colour, shape and location, distance and closeness, motion and rest.”
— Leonardo da Vinci
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: Join Louise and fellow painters in a three-day people-painting workshop. With brushes in hand and fresh paint on palettes, painters will explore fundamentals of watercolor portraiture — the interweaving of light, shade and shadow, color and shape, position, distance and nearness, to create form.
Starting each day with a daily demonstration, Louise will provide guidance on drawing, quick sketches, direct painting with the brush using monochromatic and full color schemes, exploration of surface textures, rough-brushing, wet-into-wet painting, transparent washes, and more.
The first two days will be devoted to portraits, the third day to the figure. Both days will emphasize development of technical facility, design and composition, and varied methods of handling watercolor in the painting of people.
Each day will end with a gentle critique.
Together, Louise and fellow painters will explore the nuances of drawing and painting heads, faces, features, and figures from photos and from life.
Louise is known, not only for her skill at rendering portraits and figures, but for her ability to truly teach, to involve the class in discussion, and with gentle humor, impart information during painting demonstrations. Her aim: encourage painters to reach individual goals.
