I frequently tramped eight or ten miles through the deepest snow to keep an
appointment with a beech-tree, or a yellow birch, or an old acquaintance
among the pines.

RANGE CREATIVE ART CENTER
WINTER Watercolor Class: Painting Grays

Class Description • THE GRAYS OF WINTER
Brighten your winter days with fellow painters in Louise Lundin's watercolor class which begins Thursday, January 14, 2010. Painters will create GRAYS (warm and cool neutrals) by combining complementary hues. Grays (neutrals) are subtle and powerful. By adding them to our creative repertoire, colors will sing, their visual voices sweet, deep, and strong.

Subjects will include SKIES and CLOUDS, SNOWY WOODS, SNOWY FIELDS, and SUN-DAPPLED SNOW. Four sessions start Thursday, January 14, 21, 28, and February 4, from 1:00 – 3:30 PM at the Range Creative Art Center. At the end of each lesson, students will have a completed work to sign, take home, and frame. All levels welcome. MATERIALS LIST.

To register, Email classes@rangeartcenter.org, call 218-263-6785, or write to Range Creative Art Center, 328 W. Howard Street, Hibbing, MN 55746.

Comments from painters who have taken lessons from Louise:

  • "This workshop MORE than met my expectations."
  • "The techniques you showed us [when painting children from photos] are transferable to other subjects besides children."
  • "I appreciated the discussion about paints and good artist's books to read. I typed up all my notes the next day."
  • "Where do I begin to describe all that I learned (which is SO much): shapes, to simplify, understand and draw structure of the face, and that it's OK to make a mistake."
  • "Your enthusiasm and teaching methods are inspiring!"
  • "You got the knowledge across to all!"
  • "Wonderful workshop, such a treat!"
  • "I learned how to make a quick contour drawing to loosen up."
  • "The instruction and demos were valuable."
  • "You took me from never drawing a face, to drawing and painting portraits I was proud of."
  • "You took a serious subject (portraits) and still built humor and fun into the class."
  • "I wish I could come every year!"
  • "Your obvious passion for people is contagious."

"As a beginning painter, your first thousand watercoors should stick pretty closely to representation. A few experiments to loosen up. A few forays in abstract design. A lot of attention to the translation of the round world to flat paper."

Rex Brandt
